Everyday Peace Indicators Data Cleaning

The nonprofit organization Everyday Peace Indicators (EPI) works to help communities emerging from conflict. As part of USAID-funded projects, EPI conducted surveys in the post-conflict countries of Colombia and Sri Lanka. The data that came in from these surveys was complex and the organization struggled to use it in its existing format.

EPI consultant Leslie MacColman reached out to R for the Rest of Us for support getting the data into a usable format. Having gone through the R in 3 Months program, Leslie knew that R was a good choice to clean this data, but needed support to do so. Working together with Leslie over several months, we got the data into a usable format.

With the data cleaned, Leslie was able to create reports for EPI using Quarto. Going from messy data to structured data with R was eye opening for Leslie. As she put it:

The many hours I've spent in front of my computer crunching this data in R has me wondering why I ever did anything else with my life.

For EPI, working in R means that any future survey data that comes in can be cleaned with the same code, ensuring that the organization can help more communities emerging from conflict.
